When we talk about Macronutrients we are usually talking about the top three:
Carbohydrates
Protein
Fat
Now even though they're plenty more macronutrients, we can usually focus on the top three during diets and simple portion control.
FAT though can be a touchy subject. Before the 1990's fat was used in large amounts in all ways, shapes, and forms when it came to cooking and even when not cooking. But sadly something happened in the 1990's that changed the way American's ate for decades.
In the 1990's a couple of reports by the scientific community about fat being the leading cause of obesity in America were published. This backed by politicians and the food industry caused an immediate dietary change in Americas cuisine which spelled long term disaster to our wellbeing, but we'll get to that.
The thought was that because some "Fat" was Saturated it was all bad for you and should be avoided if you wanted to keep your figure. So as Americans indulged in the new to the market "Fat Free' products by stores, they lacked the knowledge to take a step further and investigate into what the Fat was replaced with.
*SIDE NOTE: There are three main types of fat- Saturated Fats, Polyunsaturated Fats, and Trans Fats. Polyunsaturated Fats are the healthy fat and have been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. The other two...stay away from.
Now back to the story.
The food industry replaced all fats or at least as much as they could with everyones favorite...SUGAR!! So what used to be vegetable fats "healthier options" and what use to be fat content "Essential Macronutrient" because terribly unhealthy for us along with NO CHANGE IN CALORIE COUNT.
With SUGARS replacing Fat in the ingredients of food products, the Fat content was lowered "With a low-fat label for marketing purposes" and the takeover of CARBOHYDRATES was upon us and has been ever since. Since the introduction of Sugar to the diet of Americans instead of healthy nutritionally required fat, cardio vascular diseases and obesity are now common and wildly accepted even though they are both leading causes in almost every single type of illness and disease within humans.
If you were involved in the sugar industry around the 1990's you "Luckily" made a ton of money.... If you were apart of the pharmaceutical industry after the 1990's you made "still are" a ton of money.
Take away: Drop the added Sugar and Carbohydrates from your diet the best that you can and replace it with healthy portions of Polyunsaturated "And other healthier options" and watch your healthy and weight both improve for the better!
